One of the main causes of viscosity breakdown is shearing.  Mechanical shearing occurs when 2 thin layers of oil move in opposite directions.  One area where this commonly occurs is between the cylinder wall and the piston.  Once viscosity is lost, the thin layer of oil that keeps the metal parts from touching begins to disappear, allowing metal to metal contact and accelerated wear.  The problem becomes even worse when the subject engine has had modifications done to turn up the power!  I know a lot of people who have spent many hours and dollars to produce HUGE amounts of power.  Often overlooked, but one of the least expensive items that should be on every gear head's list of must do's is using the absolute best motor oils available and AMSOIL is the best!  Not only is AMSOIL superior to Mobil 1 in resisting viscosity breakdown, so are a few others.  Check out our complete line here.
